Education

Education for our youth is provided by three primary sources: Parents in the home, Public Education, Church.  Here we will deal with public schools.

The Problem:

  •  High dropout rate (national average 47%).
  • Poor quality of education on important subjects such as Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, English, History, Science, Morality, and work ethics.
  •  Low standards (no one fails).
  • Lack of proper discipline in the classroom.
  •   The presence of distractions such as sophisticated Security (i.e. locked doors, metal detectors, ISD police, cameras, and special security) in our schools.
  •  Local authority has been removed from our principals and teachers causing a crisis in behavior and quality teaching time.
  • NEA involvement (teachers union).
  • Parent’s poor attitude toward the school.

The Cause:

  • Teachers use academic language in parent communication, causing conflict, miscommunication between parents and teachers.
  • Children are not challenged to be self-starters therefore they are bored and distracted.
  • Lack of challenge and excitement at public school.
  • Physical activities tend to replace serious thinking.
  • Laws and rules tend to prohibit disciplinary action by teachers and principals.
  • Priority for many students is not learning but social standings among their peers (some students are more concerned about the clothes they wear, the car they drive or their parent’s car than they are with academics).

Possible Solutions:

  • Return autonomy authority on disciplinary matters to the principal at each school and the teacher in each classroom.
  • Involve every student in physical activities such as competitive sports everyday.
  • Remove from the school excessive locking, metal detectors, cameras, police and security guards.
  • Implement the voucher system (give parents a voucher to send the child to any school (or home school).  This may not pay for the complete cost of education but would pay for the academics (but not sports related costs).  If you have to pay for something it is more valuable to you.
  • Parents should require children to be accountable for their actions.
